A foundress mite enters a brood cell just before it is capped, and everything after that runs on a fixed clock — this is why drone brood produces more mites than worker brood, and why queen cells barely produce any at all.

Why the brood type matters

This is the actual mechanism behind drone brood removal as a mite control: pulling and freezing a frame of capped drone brood removes a disproportionate share of the mites that are actively reproducing in the colony, since each drone cell was worth roughly 65% more mites than a worker cell would have produced. It is also why a queen cell caught up in a mite wash is nearly always a false alarm rather than a sign of a mite problem specific to queens.
